I like to think of spirituality as the concept of connecting with something bigger than ourselves. Connection with the source of eternal possibility can be so vast and complex that it can be easy to lose our frame of reference along the way, our “groundedness.” Grounding is an energetic technique whereby we tether ourselves to our present reality. It allows us to feel rooted, supported, and reinforced.
Oftentimes, when people begin their journey of spiritual exploration, whether it be through meditation, clairvoyance, channeling, astral projection, or any other form, it’s easy to get a little bit lost. Sometimes, people open themselves up too rapidly and too aggressively for what they are presently able to handle. A common example of this would be using psychedelics and experiencing “bad trips.” Seldom are there such shortcuts in spiritual connection, and that is why I promote grounded spirituality to promote safe and sustainable growth.
That’s where grounding pays dividends. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve witnessed going down (up?) a spiritual rabbit hole and losing the context of where they are going and where they have come from goes in relation to themselves. They get lost. They float away. Being in control of our own spiritual experiences to the degree that we’re able enables us to initially explore in a way that works individually for each of us.
In terms of basic application, when I teach spiritual tools, the first one I begin with is a grounding cord:
If you’re new to this, I recommend sitting up straight in a chair with feet “planted” on the floor. Feel free to close your eyes if it helps; after all, imagination is a psychic ability.
Try to allow all excess agitation or restlessness flow down through your aura and body, through the chakras on the bottom of your feet. Take your time to settle into your body and bring your awareness to your base of your spine, your tailbone, where your first chakra resides.
From the tip of your tailbone, establish an energetic connection, a grounding cord, from the base of your spine that drops from there all the way down to the center of the earth, where it also attaches. Do your best to bring your awareness to that connection and to allow the cord to feel taught yet springy. This can now serve as your spiritual tether. It is what keeps you grounded, and allows you to access all kinds of warm and strong earth energy (that we will get into later.)
It is not permanent and can be undone at any time, but a grounding cord provides a lot of solid, stalwart, support as you explore the vastness that surrounds us, while also providing you a frame of reference and way to return to safety.
